The message that there is no safe amount and no safe time during pregnancy in which to consume alcohol is long overdue (‘No alcohol is safe at any stage of pregnancy’, Irish Medical Times, April 28, 2017). Dr Mary O’Mahony must be congratulated for stating unambiguously that “Children with FASD [foetal alcohol spectrum disorder] fill our foster care places, adults with FAS fill our jails and many people are misdiagnosed.” Her message is necessary because even a short time ago some obstetricians were not adequately stringent about this.
